Have a strong musical foundation but want more scholarly exploration? A master’s in Music will help you advance your artistry to the next level. Our program offers a comprehensive curriculum in music literature, orchestration, conducting, and research methods, with an emphasis on music history. In this program, you will immerse yourself in the world of music and receive individualized applied lessons in primary and secondary areas of choice.

Within this lively atmosphere are talented musicians who call Portland their home. As a graduate student in music, you have the freedom to choose from a range of music courses to deepen your knowledge—from composition to musicology, theory to pedagogy—for your final project. At PSU, you will gain the experience and knowledge you need to make a difference in your career and community.

Serving students who seek a broad graduate degree in music, the M.A./M.S. in Music provides advanced studies in research methods, music theory, music history, literature, pedagogy, conducting, and arranging. Students take applied music in their performance area or in composition and in a secondary performance area. Students pursue a culminating project in performance, composition, pedagogy, musicology, ethnomusicology, or music theory. Students successfully completing the M.A./M.S. in Music will have gained the necessary skills to prepare them for continued study in a doctoral program or to pursue professional work as a teacher, performer, composer, church musician, or related career.

為來自中國的學(xué)生設(shè)計(jì) To be admitted to PSU for a master’s program, applicants must satisfy University requirements and be accepted by the academic department in which the graduate study will occur. Admission eligibility is based on receipt of a baccalaureate degree equivalent to a United States four-year bachelor's degree from a college or university recognized as an institution of higher education by the Ministry of Education in the relevant country or be regionally accredited within the U.S. Regular Admission: To be considered for regular admission, applicants must have a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or the equivalent (on the U.S. 4.0 scale). Applicants who have earned 9 or more letter-graded graduate credits must have a minimum graduate GPA of 3.0 or the equivalent; this graduate GPA supersedes the undergraduate GPA. IELTS: 6.5 overall score with minimum sub scores of 6.5 in reading and writing, TOEFL score of Paper-based: 550 overall; 22 in writing with 20 in reading and listening, TOEFL score of Internet-based: Minimum overall score of 80 with minimum sub scores of 18 in reading and writing, PTE - Academic: 60 overall.
