Programme aims and objectives:

To provide students with a broad-based training in all major scientific disciplines for supporting their study in analytical science which is multi-disciplinary in nature;

To provide students with a solid knowledge base and skills in the variety of techniques used to solve a diversity of problems in analytical and testing science;

To help students to develop an analytical mind and good problem-solving skills needed to solve the diversity of problems encountered in their career as a professional analyst;

To equip students with a solid knowledge base in science and analytical science to support their career developments and further education in this and related fields.

Upon successful completion of this programme, students should be able to:

• explain the fundamental principles of analytical science from multi-disciplinary perspective;
• apply knowledge and practical skills of different scientific discipline and appropriate scientific techniques to solve practical real world problems;
• collect and interpret analytical testing laboratory data and communicate those findings effectively in oral and written form;
• appraise the impact of analytical science in the research and development of selected industries (e.g. chemical testing industry, food industry, pharmaceutical and herbal products manufacturing industry, environmental abatement industry, novel materials manufacturing industry, biomedical industry etc.);
• work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

Programme Features:

• Students are trained as analytical and testing scientists by adopting a multi-disciplinary approach.
• Relevant courses offered by the Department of Biology, Chemistry and Physics equip students with strong broad scientific knowledge.
• A variety of modern analytical instruments housed in the Chemistry Department provide students amble hands-on experience to solve wide scope of analytical problems.
• The capstone course “Chemical Testing Laboratory Management and Accreditation” provides students with solid knowledge base for the employment in the Testing and Certification Industry.
• The one-year final year project engagement offers students with practical training in solving real world problems.

Grade C or above in GCE O-Level/ GCSE/ IGCSE English; or Grade E or above in GCE AS Level or AL Level English; Grade E or above in HKALE Use of English (AS Use of English); IB - Grade 4 in: IB English A (Higher or Standard Level); or IB English B (Higher Level); or IB English Literature and Performance (Standard Level) or Grade 5 in: IB English B (Standard Level).
