Major in Comparative & World Literature, Comparative Literature Concentration

The Comparative Literature major provides an engagement with two or more literary and cultural traditions, studied in their original languages. Comparative literature is an interdisciplinary field whose practitioners study literature and culture across national borders, across time periods, across languages, across genres, across boundaries between literature and the other arts (fine and applied arts, music, painting, dance, film, etc.), and across disciplines (philosophy, science, medicine, law, history, architecture, sociology, politics, and the like). Study Abroad and work in several languages and cultures and across disciplines is strongly encouraged.

Major in Comparative & World Literature, World Literature Concentration

The World Literature major retains the comparative and international dimension of comparative literature, but focuses on literatures and cultures from around the globe in English translation (no foreign language required). World literature refers to literature that has a readership and an impact beyond its original language and cultural area.

English: 4 years required; Math: 3 or 3.5 years required, 4 years recommended; Social sciences: 2 years required, 4 years recommended; Lab sciences: 2 years required, 4 years recommended; Language other than English: 2 years required, 4 years recommended; Flexible academic units: 2 years required, 4+ years recommended. English language Requirements: International undergraduate students whose total TOEFL scores are 102 (TOEFL iBT) or below (*total IELTS score of 7.0 or below) are required to take the EPT. To be exempt from EPT, students must score either on TOEFL iBT: total 103 or above, and 25 or above on both speaking & writing; or on IELTS: 7.5 or above total, and 7 or above on both speaking and writing.
